Honduras HOLIDAYS

Located in the heart of Central America, Honduras is the isthmus’s second largest country after Nicaragua, covering an area roughly the size of England. Few people make it any further than the impressive ruins of Copan, but if you are willing to go beyond the normal you will find a country with a limitless range of virgin forests, undiscovered colonial towns and some of the best reefs on the continent.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO IN Honduras

SNORKELLING

This is one of the easiest places in the world to go snorkelling. The reef literally runs all the way around the island, so whether you are staying at a hotel or renting a house you can walk onto the beach, put on your snorkelling gear and the reef is there.

HORSE RIDING

Surrounding the town of Copan ruinas are small low lying hills and gentle streams, all of which are surrounded by virgin jungle. From the hacienda San Lucas you can ride for a full or half day into the native forest

MAYAN RUINS

The Mayan ruins of Copan are small but intricate. Copan was known as the artistic centre of the Mayan world, so expect to see detailed hieroglyphics in excellent condition throughout the site. There are also 2 small temples as well as numerous other places worth exploring, so allow a full day here.

WILDLIFE

Some of the best wildlife in Honduras is found around the Pico Bonito National Park, though nearly every destination here offers the chance of seeing monkeys, colourful birds as well as the usual South American creepy crawlies!

JUNGLE

Heading inland in Honduras is an adventure unto itself. There is little infrastructure and roads are poor, but the rewards can be great. The Pico Bonito national park is a forested area with numerous walking paths and hidden waterfalls

DIVING

This is the cheapest place in the world to obtain your PADI certificate and learn how to dive. The reef around the bay Islands is in excellent condition and there are not only a variety of corals but a long list of dive options available which include; drift dives, night dives and wall diving.

I couldn’t recommend the team at Latin Odyssey more highly. An exceptional service from beginning to end.

AN OVERVIEW OF Honduras

With a Caribbean and Pacific coast the options for both beach and reef exploration are limitless.  The Bay Islands on the Caribbean coast provide one of the cheapest places to learn to dive in the world and if diving is not for you then its numerous shallow reefs make an ideal place to snorkel.  The three islands that make up this archipelago all offer something completely different.

The Mayan ruins of Copan rival Tikal for the best in Central America.  With its intricately designed temples and facades, Copan is the artistic capital of the Mayan world.

The untracked jungles of La Mosquitia to the east of the country has mountain top cloud forests that teem with colourful birds and chattering monkeys and are an undiscovered paradise for those who are a little more adventurous!
