Costa Rica HOLIDAYS

Whether it is a holiday in Costa Rica or a Costa Rica honeymoon, this is a nature-lover’s paradise, boasting a biodiversity comparable to the Amazon in a country the size of Wales. Thanks to years of stability and peace, a sophisticated tourism infrastructure showcases an amazingly rich and varied network of national parks that protect an impressive 25% of the country. The relaxed and friendly nature of the proud locals gives you a warm welcome.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO IN Costa Rica

BIRDLIFE

Nowhere else in Latin America has such a profusion of birdlife as Costa Rica. In one 2 week trip here we saw 324 different types of birds!  It is the variety that draws your attention to them, most are incredibly colourful and the birds of prey are a sight to behold

BEACHES

The best place for some time on the beach is the Pacific side. Although the country borders both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean the Pacific side has a better range of hotels, whilst the Caribbean side can be quite touristy in parts

NATIONAL PARKS

Costa Rica has a varied network of national parks that protect an impressive 25% of the country. They vary in size from small pockets of cloud forest to large areas of the country and each offers something different, so whether you are after a stretch of coast or a mountain retreat you will find it here

CLOUD FOREST

Costa Rica is blessed with an abundance of cloud forest, the most popular being the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Here you will find the resplendent quetzal (if you are lucky), but it is also the prime area to go zip-lining through the forest or walk on hanging bridges that break the canopy

REMOTE AREAS

Getting off the beaten path in Costa Rica is quite hard to do. The country has an excellent infrastructure, but sometimes this can mean mass tourism. We know a couple of places that are away from the crowds, the Osa Peninsula is one, but there are others.

VOLCANOES

This part of the isthmus has a number of active volcanoes. Poas Volcano outside San Jose is a nice day trip, but the main one is Arenal Volcano. Constantly active with a number of hot springs at its base, nothing beats sipping a cocktail at night whilst watching the pyrotechnic display.

MAP OF Costa Rica

My wife and I would not consider using anyone else for arranging travel in Central and South America. Their high level of knowledge, attention to detail and personal responsiveness is almost unique within the industry.

San Jose, the capital, the main areas inland and the northern pacific coast all have similar weather patterns.  For these regions the dry season is from December to April and the wet from May to October.

The northern Caribbean coast around the area of Tortuguero National park and the Osa Peninsula in the south west can have occasional rain all year round, but they also have some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the country.

Costa Rica has a more complicated weather pattern to that of its neighbouring countries. The Caribbean and Pacific coasts have different seasons as does the central part of the country, though the rainy season is generally May to November

Although this is also the hurricane season for the Caribbean Guatemala doesn’t generally get directly affected, but generally a time to avoid visiting Costa Rica

AN OVERVIEW OF Costa Rica

If you are looking for adventure you’ll find it here with rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horse-riding, surfing and zip-lining through the forest canopy.  The grand rivers of Costa Rica have impressive rapids that offer world class rafting of different grades to suit all adrenalin needs.  It’s easy to see why Costa Rica has become the world’s leading ‘eco-tourism’ destination.

Monteverde cloudforest
The famed cloud forest reserve of Monteverde found in the north of the country is positively teeming with life.  The sight of the sun setting over the pacific ocean is stunning from up here.

Tortuguero
Tortuguero is set in dense rainforest on the Caribbean coast, far from any roads, where a network of backwaters offers unrivalled opportunities to view the abundant wildlife up close.  Literally thousands of Green Turtles land on these beaches to nest each year, giving the place its name.

Arenal Volcano
The perfect volcanic cone of Arenal is one of the most active in the world, regularly spouting lava.  This firework display can be best appreciated at night while you soak in thermal spring waters with a cocktail in your hand.

Nicoya Peninsula
Pristine beaches are lined with coastal jungle offering the perfect location to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of this stunning coastline.  Away from the more developed parts of the coast are a handful of boutique hotels that offer an exclusive retreat in paradise.Osa Peninsula
This Pacific peninsula is the last frontier in Costa Rica boasting the richest concentration of flora and fauna.  Relatively inaccessible and only recently opening up to tourism, Osa offers an ideal opportunity to explore the wild!
