A note about pricing

This pure Colombia itinerary takes in the most interesting and beautiful parts of the country, from Bogota, Medellin and its surroundings, Cartagena of course and a final few days on the Caribbean Islands off the Colombia’s coastline.

As a guideline, the itinerary outlined below would cost approximately £4,975 per person based on two people travelling and includes all activities on a private basis, private transfers, accommodation and taxes and meals where mentioned.

Please note that the itinerary does not include any international or internal flights

 

 

 

Day 1

Fly to Bogota

Fly to Bogota. Met on arrival and transferred to the Hotel Opera for 2 nights in a junior suite on a b&b basis.

Day 2

City tour of Bogota

Met for your half day tour of the historical centre of Bogota, known as La Candelaria. The ancient quarter is formed by old “casonas” or grand houses of Spanish influence with iron windows, thick wooden doors, balconies and internal patios that hide beautiful gardens. You will visit Plaza Bolívar with a statue of Simón Bolívar in the centre – it was originally called Plaza Mayor and was used for civil and military events, as a market, bull ring and an execution platform!  The visit continues on to the Palace of Justice and to the seat of the Alcaldía Mayor and then onto the Museo Botero which houses works by Fernando Botero, Picasso, Renoir, Dalí, Matisse, Monet and Giacometti,. Finally you will visit the Museo del Oro which features nearly 34.000 gold objects and 20,000 stone, ceramic, textiles and precious stones of the Quimbaya, Calima, Tairona, Sinu, Muisca, Tolima, Tumaco and Magdalena cultures and is considered the most important collection of its kind in the world.

Day 3

2 day 1 night tour to Villa Leyva

Met for your 2 day 1 night tour to Villa Leyva. Drive north (1 hr) to Zipaquira, across the central region of the savanna, home to the famous flower cultures. At Zipaquira you visit the impressive Salt Cathedral, a magnificent work of engineering.  Continue to Villa de Leyva, one of the area’s most beautiful colonial towns and was founded in 1572 by Andrés Díaz Venero de Leyva by order of the kingdom of Granada. Today, the city is a colonial jewel with an enormous plaza (Plaza Mayor) that measures 14,000 sq m and is surrounded by Spanish style houses, small alleys, cobblestone streets and the XVII century parochial church. Overnight in the Hotel Pousada de San Antonio in a suite on a b&b basis.

Day 4

Fly to Medellin

Morning free for personal exploration. Transferred to the airport in Bogota for your internal flight to Medallin, with a stop in the Convento Ecce Huomo. Founded in 1620, it was an important point of evangelisation in a region populated by infidel Indian communities. Depart on AV 9726 at 16:37 arrive 17:36. Met on arrival and transferred to the Patio del Mundo for 2 nights in a superior room on a b&b basis.

Day 5

City tour of Medellin

Met for your half day tour of Medellín. This morning you will visit the San Antonio park, known as La Plazoleta, which is home to 20 or so Botero sculptures as well as the Museo de Antioquia. Continue to the Plazuela de San Ignacio, the oldest in town, which is surrounded by the church of San Ignacio, a true baroque jewel. The San Ignacio cloister was built in a Neoclassical style with gothic elements in the interior. You will visit the Parque de los Pies Descalzos, a place inspired by eastern philosophy containing a small bamboo forest. You will continue to visit; Parque de los Deseos, the Edificio Inteligente, the Teatro Metropolitano, the Alpujarra, seat to the government offices, the municipality and the Gobernación de Antioquia, the Cisneros park or Parque de las Luces. You will then take the cable car to the Santo Domingo neighbourhood which has a fantastic view of the city. Return to the city centre and Cerro Nutibara which offers another view of the city of Medellin. Afternoon free for personal exploration.

Day 6

2 day 1 night visit to Santa Fé de Antioquia

Met for your 2 day 1 night visit to Santa Fé de Antioquia, passing the Parque de los Tamarindos, you arrive at the Puente de Occidente bridge, a masterwork of engineering that connected Medellín to the sea and accelerated the area’s economic growth. Arrival in Santa Fé de Antioquia, where time seems to have stalled in the Colonial era. Santa Fé was founded in 1541 by Jorge Robledo and was the capital of Antioquia till 1826 when the government was transferred to Medellín. The narrow alleys flanked by houses and buildings whitened with lime, are practically intact. It is worth visiting the church of Santa Barbara, the museum of liturgical art, the cathedral and the Juan del Corral museum. Remainder of the day for individual activities. Overnight in the Mariscal Robledo in a superior room on a b&b basis.

Day 7

Return to Medellin

Return to Medellin in the afternoon with a break to visit San Jerónimo en-route, which contains a beautiful church and the village’s Colonial and republican architecture. On the way, you will see fruit stalls selling pineapple, mango, tamarind pulp and oranges. Overnight in the Patio del Mundo for the night a superior room on a b&b basis.

Day 8

Fly to Cartagena

Met and transferred to the airport for your internal flight to Cartagena, depart on AV 9510 at 13:03 arrive 14:10. Met on arrival and transferred to the Ananda hotel for 3 nights in a deluxe suite on a b&b basis

Day 9-10

In Cartagena

In Cartagena free for personal exploration. This UNESCO world heritage city is probably the best in Latin America. Situated on the coast, the historical quarter is a gem to explore on foot. The quarter is walled in from the rest of the city and contains beautiful churches, colonial buildings all set amongst ocean views as well as some excellent restaurants & bars.

Day 11

Speedboat to the islands

Met and transferred (10 min) to the pier for your speedboat (2 hrs, shared basis with other guests) to Mucura Island and the Punta Faro hotel, depart 11:30 arrive 13:30. 3 nights in a junior suite with an ocean view on a full board basis.

Day 12-13

On the beach

2 days free for personal exploration and relaxation. The hotel has a number of activities which can be booked and paid for locally which include; paddle boarding, snorkelling, kayaking, bike rides and walks through the mangroves, boat rides around the island, beach combing or simply spoil yourself with a massage on the beach

Day 14

Fly Home

Take the speedboat (2 hrs, shared basis with other guests) back to Cartagena, depart 09:30 arrive 11:30. Met on arrival and transferred to the airport for your return international flight home.
