The Convento do Carmo is Brazil’s first luxury historic hotel and certainly our favourite in the city. Having kept all of the original structure from when it was a Convent they have combined its original colonial architecture and blended it with the graceful furniture and works of art of the modern world. Even if you do not stay here, you should visit it.

The Convento do Carmo belongs to the traditional Pousadas de Portugal hotel group. Construction began on this friary in 1586, commissioned by the First Order of Carmelite Friars.

Over the centuries, it has been the stage for major historical events and today it is the best hotel in the city. The building has been kept completely the same, but they have turned the rooms into a bedroom and in doing so they have transformed it beautifully and the hotel will take you back to an age of decadence and elegance.

The hotel features 79 rooms and suites, a world-class restaurant, coffee shop, bar, pool, fitness centre, spa, library ,music room, meeting rooms, as well as a museum and a church.
