CULTURAL TOURISM ECUADOR

The Andean mountains of Ecuador cut through the country forming enormous valleys and are home to tribes of indigenous Indians that still maintain their way of life. Their towns consist of narrow cobbled streets, quiet plaza’s, 19th century architecture and domed churches make, whilst their markets have played an important role in Indian life, providing regular gathering places for trade and socialising. Ecuador is a charming step back in time
In Ecuador we believe you have one of the best opportunities for an authentic non-intrusive experience with local people and this can be done by visiting the Huaorani tribe. The Huaorani are a timeless tribe. Their origins are unknown and their language (Huaorani translates as ‘The People’) has no relation to any other known tongue.

For thousands of years they have made their home in the lush forests of the Amazon. Here you will get to spend time with local people, either exploring their land with a local guide, or taking time to visit their tourism initiatives, which often work to support their traditional lifestyle.

BEST PLACES FOR CULTURAL TOURISM IN ECUADOR

Ecuador offer one of the best places to spend time with a remote Amazonian tribe without the touristy feel. In time, all becomes touristy to a degree, but the tribes here have tried to maintain their way of life and live within different boundaries.

Cuenca

Undoubtedly Ecuador’s most beautiful city and designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1999. Encompassed by fertile valleys, this colonial town is ideal for exploring on foot. Narrow cobbled streets, quiet plaza’s, 19th century architecture and domed churches make it a charming step back in time.

Ecuadorian Amazon

Known as El Oriente, the Ecuadorian Amazon is a true rainforest experience. Situated a short distance away from Quito, you have the possibility of spotting giant armadillos, manatees, anacondas, fresh water dolphins and countless monkeys.

Otavalo

Situated north of Quito amongst the Andean foothills, is an area famed for its lakes, national parks and the bustling market town of Otavalo. For centuries, regional markets have played an important role in Indian life, providing regular gathering places for trade and socialising.
