Corumbau

Corumbau means "distant place" in the Pataxo native language and owes its name to the wide sandy point that stretches out into the sea from the peninsula.  This sums up Corumbau.  It is a remote stretch of coastline in Bahia, difficult to get to, but worth it once you arrive as the endless pristine beach is worth the journey unto itself.
The beach at Corumbau is brilliant white and is lined with crystal clear waters, 9 miles long with vast groves of nut palm trees which act as a border. There is even a long coral reef formation that stretches out approximately 6 miles into the sea and disappears as the tide rises. This is the perfect place to get away from it all as there are only two or three small hotels here, so privacy is guaranteed.

The reservation of the Patoxes is on the other side of the Corumbau River, where you can visit and get an insight into their culture and traditions. The seafood is always fresh and comes straight from the fishing boats of the inhabitants of the local village thus supporting sustainable tourism.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Below is a list of things that can be seen and done in the area, all of which can be arranged locally, or with us prior to departure.

Indigenous Village. Cruising through the crystal blue waters of the sea, anchor is cast on the beach for a pleasant hike to the village of the Pataxós Indians to discover a little of their culture which has been part of Brazil since before the colonization.

Cahy Sandbar.  A trip back in time, with a landscaped that is practically untouched. The Cahy Sandbar (Barra do Cahy) was the first contact that the Portuguese ships had with Brazilian territory. The coral reefs were a barrier that made it impossibile to reach the coast, which forced the Portuguese to return to the seas in search of a safer port. As a suggestion, go by schooner and return on foot.

Coral Reefs. A 30-minute boat trip takes you to the coral reef barriers where it is possible to snorkel among the rich marine life.
Corumbau River. Pushing off from the banks of the Corumbau River and navigating through the dense mangroves, this trip includes the unique sensation  of watching the sun set slowly over the horizon.

Caraíva Village. The schooner takes you to a neighboring beach, known as Caraíva, for a stroll through the sandy streets or to enjoy the deliciously cooked crabs while overlooking the banks of the Caraíva River.

Espelho's Beach. An hour and a half boat ride from Ponta do Corumbau to the famous Espelho's Beach, where you can savor the delicacies of Bahian cuisine.

Bike Rental. To visit the pituresque fisherman's village or to enjoy the low tide and pedal along the endless beaches.

Canoe Trip. It is possible to row out to the Coral Reefs in front of the Fazenda São Francisco, silently navigating up and down the Corumbau River, taking in the untouched flora and fauna, pausing to rest and snorkel along the shallow waters of the river.

Massages. Lymphatic drainage, Reiki, Relaxing, Thai-Massage, Zen-Shiatsu, Tao-Shiatsu, Neurosedative Massage. Consult us for other options.

Indigenous Dance with the Pataxós. In the evenings, several Pataxós indians sing and dance around a fire pit with an enormous fire. A unique experience into the traditions and customes of those that have been here since before our arrival.

Visit to Monte Pascoal. A visit to the Mount Pascol National Park is possible with an L200 pick-up or a Hilux, crossing cattle farms surrounded by the Atlantica Forest. An ascent to the top of Mount Pascoal is possible, but requires physical preparation.
