Bolivia HOLIDAYS

Bolivia lies at the heart of South America and a holiday in Bolivia involves exploring something of a well-kept secret. Known as ‘Upper Peru’, until after Simon Bolivar led the country to independence in 1825, it is a land of contrasts. This is where you will find; colonial towns, salt flats as far as the eye can see, jagged mountains draped in Amazonian jungle, 6,000 metre peaks covered in glaciers and the most dangerous road in the world.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO IN Bolivia

COLONIAL TOWNS

The colonial town of Sucre is one of the jewels in the South America crown and it is also one of the least visited. A perfect place to explore on foot where you will find cobbled streets lined with colourfully dressed locals selling their goods surrounded by historical buildings

LOCAL MARKETS

Bolivia has a couple of superb local markets worth exploring. La Paz has the witches market as well as the Plaza San Francisco, but one of the best is the local Sunday market of Tarabuco located outside Sucre. In Tarabuco you will find not the touristy things but trade between the locals which is a lovely insight into their way of life

SALT FLATS

The great salt flat of Uyuni has to be seen to be believed. A desert like landscape of salt as far as the eye can see, where in the rainy season it is covered in an inch of water making the whole place reflective. Stay in one of the simple salt hotels to really immerse yourself

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

From Uyuni heading south to the Chilean border is one of the wildest places in the world.  Accessible only by 4×4 vehicles this 3 day journey will take you across the Siloli Desert where large pieces of volcanic rock reside, below 6,000 snow capped Andean peaks to lakes teeming with flamingos.

THE JUNGLE

There are 9 countries which border the Amazon rainforest and Bolivia’s in probably the most unique.  Known as the Yungas, this is where the Andes meet the Amazon.  Here you will find jagged, low lying mountains draped in rainforest and isolated Amazonian tribes. Lodges are extremely basic, but you come here for the other things in life.

LAKES

Lake Titicaca is the mythical birthplace of the Inca Empire and as such the place is covered in history. The ancient ruins along its borders of Tiahuanaco are certainly worth some time, but it is the islands on the lake that you want to explore.  Isla de Sol and Isla de Luna (Sun and Moon) are places trapped in the past, places that preserve their ancestry.

SELECT THE MONTH YOU WANT TO TRAVEL

The majority of Bolivia sits on the Altiplano, a high, flat stretch of land that runs from northern Chile all the way to Peru and as such it receives little rainfall.

Bolivia’s rainy season is from November to March and during these months flying in and out of the Amazon can be unpredictable but if there is rain in the Uyuni region in the centre of the country, the salt flats are covered in a shallow covering of water giving it a mirror like sheen, making the area all the more magical

AN OVERVIEW OF Bolivia

It is also the most indigenous of the South American countries with over 80% of the population being of direct indigenous descent. Native religions, dialects, clothes, music and medicines all form part of the daily life on the street. While the Spanish influence is strong in the colonial architecture, most notably in Sucre, Bolivia has remained close its roots.

Upscale hotels and international standard restaurants are hard to come by and the infrastructure may need some work, but the country’s charm lies in its people and the experiences you will have travelling through this beautiful country.

Time to travel:

There are primarily two seasons in Bolivia. The dry season is from May to October, whilst the wet season is from November to April. It is coldest during the months of June to September and wettest from December to March. The dry season is best for travel due to the better road conditions and generally sunny skies and warm temperatures during the day. Travel to most regions of Bolivia is certainly possible year round but you must be prepared to deal with the seasonal changes, all of which can happen in one day.
