Angel Falls and Canaima

Canaima National Park is in Venezuela's remote south eastern corner and contains some of the most interesting flora, fauna and geological formations found anywhere on the continent. At roughly the size of Belgium it contains flat table mountains known as 'Tepuis', black lagoons fed by multiple waterfalls lined by pink sandy beaches, mist-shrouded plateaus inhabited by Pemon Indians; it is no surprise that this was the setting for Conan Doyle's 'Lost World'. The majority of the park is still untouched by tourism as the only access is by plane.

The Angel Falls are the obvious highlight; a towering spine of water that drops 979 metres into the Devil's Canyon. To see the falls you must either take a light aircraft or board an Indian canoe that takes you into the heart of the Devil's Canyon.

Your stay here is in thatched lodges known as posadas where you can submerge yourself into this surreal world.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN CANAIMA

The area is synonymous with the Angel falls, an unmissable highlight, but the surrounding area is also an explorer's paradise of hidden waterfalls, canyons and lagoons. Below are some of the options available in and around Canaima.

  • 2D/1N base of Angel falls by canoe. Boat ride by motorised Indian canoe on Carrao River, crossing the Mayupa Lagoon and Arautaima rapids, overnight in hammocks on Orchid Island. Day 2, enter Churun river and into Devil's Canyon for views of Angel Falls. 1 1/2 hr trek to Laimes lookout, 200m away from the falls. Lunch at Raconcito Island, swim in lagoons at the base of Angel falls. Afternoon navigation downstream with stops at Sapo and Sapito waterfalls en-route to Canaima.

  • Full day to Angel falls by canoe. Same as above leaving early, returning late.

  • Half day flight over Angel falls, for the bird's eye view of the highest falls in the world.

  • Full day to Kavac Canyon by plane. Flying in a DC-3 over the Tepuis into the impressive Devil's canyon, with views of Angel falls. Arrive at small Indian settlement of Kavac in the Kamarata valley. Walk with a local guide through the 'enchanted valley' - one of the narrowest canyons in the world. Wade and swim through the canyon to the hidden waterfalls of Kavac. BBQ lunch. Return flight to Canaima.

  • Both the Sapo and Yuri waterfalls can be visited as half day trips from Canaima.
