Suasi Island: The Detail

Suasi is a magical, and for many, mystical place to disconnect from the world. This is a place where you may spot rare vicuñas, hike to Itapilluni Hill to contemplate colourful high-altitude sunsets, paddle a canoe around the island, go on quiet nature walks, or visit the earthy spa for massages and steam saunas with eucalyptus leaves. With 24 well-appointed but appealingly rustic rooms and the Andean Cottage (a spectacular two-bedroom lakefront suite), a candlelit gourmet restaurant, bar and game room, the lodge is the perfect place to relax after a day of doing plenty – or doing nothing at all.

Isla Suasi is just 106 acres (43 hectares) – a mere speck in the midst of Lake Titicaca. It’s a serene, remote place with no cars, no electricity, no television – and no permanent human inhabitants or buildings of any kind except for the lodge. The main residents, in fact, are: 8 alpacas and 7 wild vicuñas!  The island is the perfect spot to get away from it all and relax in peace, but it also offers a wide range of activities for even the most active travellers, ranging from nature hikes, wildlife spotting, canoeing, boating and bonfires, as well as stargazing in the Southern Hemisphere sky and relaxing with massages & sauna at a rustic spa.

Suasi has 24 rooms including an Andean Cottage. Superior rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with large bathrooms, peaked ceilings with wood beams, and chimneys. All rooms feature huge picture windows framing great views of the bay and deep blue of Lake Titicaca. The Andean Cottage is a very large & extremely private 2-bedroom lakefront suite. The superior room is elegantly rustic, with full-size or King beds. In the original wing, 9 rooms have a warm appeal, with exposed stone walls and high peaked ceilings brightened by large skylights. In the newest wing, 14 rooms are just a touch more modern, though they feature even more expansive lake views. Two rooms have balconies overlooking gardens and the lake

The Andean cottage is an ultra-private retreat on a private island – an enormous 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom suite tucked into the hillside at the water’s edge. All you see is the lake; all you hear are waves lapping up against the shore. The cottage has its own private beach and dock, as well as a terrace deck and lounge chairs right on the beach. The master bedroom features a Super King bed and a large bathtub enclosed by a picture window overlooking the lake.

The cottage features a large living room and bar, and a 2nd bedroom with 2 double beds. Each room in the suite has large picture windows with lake-level views. At night, a personal bilingual butler (on call 24 hours) arrives to light the 2 wood-burning chimneys in the cottage, and dinner can even be delivered if you prefer to dine in the cottage or on the deck.

Suasi Island also has an inviting sauna & massage room which boasts great lake views and is in keeping with the island’s rusticity. Massages by a professional masseuse take advantage of creams, oils and aromatherapy based on regional Andean plants, while a laid-back steam sauna uses eucalyptus leaves. The sauna is offered free of charge to guests.

The gourmet restaurant, lit by candlelight, is elegant and sophisticated but with relaxing rustic touches. All in all a superb place to stay!
