Darien

The Darien Province is an unspoiled region for adventurous travellers. It extends to an area of 16,000 square km covered by rivers, thick tropical vegetation, high peaks and amazing beaches. The rainforest in the Darien National Park is so thick that it is the only place where the Panamerican highway running from Alaska down to Argentina/Chile, does not penetrate. This truly wild and nature-dense region is heaven for adventurers, birders and nature lovers!
The population of Darien are mainly descendants of the slave trade brought to the Isthmus during colonial times, however the province is also inhabited by natives Indians of the Wounaan and Embera tribes that migrated from Choc in Colombia and still live with the same customs they had thousands of years ago inside the Darien National Province.
The Darien is home to the elusive Harpy Eagle, the world’s largest predator bird, once in danger of extinction and now on its’ way back thanks to Panamanian conservationists and the Peregrine Foundation. The waters that surround this inhospitable land are teeming with game fish, making this one of the most sought after destinations for deep sea fishing. In the last 5 years all the world records for largest game fish have come from these waters.
