Bocas Del Toro
The Bocas del Toro Archipelago lies off the north western coast of Panama, near the border with Costa Rica. It is made up of six islands and almost 200 tiny uninhabited islets many of which are covered in dense jungle with pristine, white sand beaches straight out of a classic Caribbean fantasy.
The population is made up of Ngobe-Bugle and Teribe Indians, Afro-Caribbean, as well as a growing expat and retiree community. To date, tourism development here has been limited so the islands have retained their local flavour and relaxed atmosphere.
The main town of Bocas is on Isla Colon and this is where you find the majority of restaurants, shops and nightlife. If you are looking to slow down and escape, there are several lodging options away from the main town on the island of Bastimentos. THINGS TO SEE AND DO
Below is a list of things to see and do around the area, though we are able to create any itinerary depending on your interests.
Diving and Snorkelling. The diving and snorkelling are outstanding - Bocas is home to some of the best-preserved hard and soft coral on the planet Zapatilla cayes. Take a day–trip by boat to the Zapatilla Cayes – part of the marine park, home only to a park ranger and covered in coconut palms you can snorkel right off the beach Deep sea fishing. There are a variety of game fish in the area, particularly Tarpon fishing is excellent here Local communities. Visit the Indian communities of the Ngöbe-Buglé and Teribe tribes Walking. Hike through luxuriant rainforest in Isla Bastimentos Park and see sloth’s, monkeys, the strawberry poison dart frog and many beautiful birds
Surfing. This is considered by many as the surfing epicentre of the southwest Caribbean, the most infamous breaks being on Playa Bluff
Beach combing. Visit the stunning wilderness beaches of Wizard and Red Frog on Isla Bastimentos
Recommended lodges in this area:
Bocas del Toro
Owned and managed by a Spanish family for ten years, Punta Caracol has earned an enviable reputation as a chi-chi destination for romance, relaxation and underwater adventure. When you arrive you will notice the absolute tranquillity of the location
Bocas del Toro
Situated on Bastimentos island, Tranquilo Bay offers you both a little jungle as well as water adventure. You can only get here by boat and there are no other lodges adjacent nearby so it is indeed a very peaceful location.
Bocas del Toro
Eclypse del Mar has tried to copy what Punta Caracol has done – creating individual cabanas over the water and in our opinion it has dropped a little short. Do not let this first line put you off as it is still a beautiful place to stay and a great alternative
