INCA ALTIPLANO
Day 1: Lima
Arrive Lima and transfer to the Country club hotel in Lima.
Day 2: Fly Arequipa
An early morning flight takes you to Arequipa (2,500m) flying over the conical El Misti volcano. One of the most beautiful cities in Peru, Arequipa is famed for its colonial architecture and the interesting Santa Catalina convent. We advise a slow afternoon city tour to include the archaeological museum, which stores the famous Juanita mummy, to allow you to acclimatise to altitude.
Day 3-4: Colca Canyon
The next two days will be spent in the deepest canyon in the world, a stunning area surrounded by Inca terracing. The region has a wealth of archaeological remains, petroglyphs and caves, and the local villages still preserve their original features such as layout of streets and richly adorned colonial churches. The area is best known for sightings of the Andean condor as well as llamas, alpacas and vicunas. Accommodation is in the rustic Colca Lodge.
Day 5: Fly Puno
Fly across the altiplano to Juliaca. Drive to Puno (3,850m) stopping to visit the picturesque pre-Inca site of Sillustani with its chullpas (funeral towers), which probably date from the 14th century. Your hotel is situated 5 minutes outside the town of Puno on the edge of Lake Titicaca.
Day 6: Lake Titicaca
Today you board your boat for a journey across Lake Titicaca. You will visit the 'floating islands' of Uros built completely of totora reed, whose people carve a living out of fishing and tourism. Continuing on to Taquile (2hrs) the remainder of the day is spent exploring this fascinating island, with its Inca remains, adobe houses and colourful people who still wear their traditional Quechua robes.
Day 7: Train to Cuzco
A full days journey on one of the great railway journeys of the world, heading north across the altiplano you pass adobe houses, herds of llamas and alpaca and the source of the Amazon! The scenery throughout is stunning, beginning with the wide wind swept altiplano, as the Andean peaks gradually get closer before dropping down into Cuzco's fertile valleys. Accommodation is in the superb Monasterio hotel.
Day 8: Cuzco
Today is spent exploring the old Inca capital and the surrounding archaeological remains. In the morning a walking tour takes you through this mysterious city with its pink tiled roofs, cobbled alleyways and tiny plazas. Visiting the Cathedral, the Inca wall of Hatunrumiyoc with its twelve sided stone along with koricancha the Inca sun temple. In the afternoon you visit the fortress citadel of Sacsaywaman that overlooks the city, along with the outlying ruins of Qenko and Tambomachay.
Day 9: Train to Machu Picchu
An early morning train ride, following the Urubamba River takes you to the 'lost city' of Machu Picchu. Alternatively you can leave the train slightly earlier and walk via Winay Wayna to the sun gate overlooking Mach Picchu (5-6hrs). On arrival you will be guided through this unique site, leaving you the afternoon to explore on your own. Accommodation is in the Machu Picchu sanctuary lodge located next to the ruins.
Day 10: In Machu Picchu
Due to the location of your accommodation you will be the first inside the ruins. Sunrise here is magnificent; clouds slowly rise off the ruins as the sun breaks the Andean range revealing this 'lost city'. The day is spent at your leisure, though we would recommend the steep but short walk to Wayna Picchu, the famous background mountain to Machu Picchu. A late afternoon train takes you back to Cuzco.
Day 11: In Cuzco
Your day is spent in the Sacred Valley visiting the market town of Pisac, where you can buy almost anything, though for people watching it doesn't get much better as locals barter and local dishes are prepared. In the afternoon you drive to the ruins of Pisac, overlooking the Urubamba valley, the ruins were once considered one of the most important in Cuzco due to its strategic location and storage of food.
Day 12-14: Fly Amazon
A short flight takes you to Puerto Maldonado where the next 3 days 2 nights are spent in the comfortable Amazonian lodge located 2 hrs by motorised canoe from Puerto Maldonado. Excursions include medicinal trails, canoe rides, bird spotting, and nocturnal boat rides.
Day 14 fly Lima.
Day 15: In Lima. Fly U.K
The final day is spent enjoying Lima's museums and colonial plaza's before a late flight back to the U.K
