Hacienda San Lucas: The DetailThe atmosphere is intensely romantic with beautiful paintings and old family photographs adorning the walls; decorative pottery hanging above shelves laden with books and candles flickering on every available surface. The original kitchen – the soul of the hacienda as they say –with its black soot stained hearth, speaks of centuries of family cooking and is in full use today. Walking out onto the outdoor veranda, you have spectacular views across the valley towards the town of Copan and the ruins. This property has over 600 hectares of land, much of which is now planted with cacao trees. There are walking trails, one of which takes in the Mayan Sapos ‘fertility’ ceremonial site. It is a very intimate property with just six guest rooms set up on the hillside above the main house, with wide veranda’s hung with hammocks. The rooms are enchanting with high ceilings, stone floors and dark wood shutters. They’re spacious and airy, with two queen beds and have a fan. The focus is on authentic Mayan country cuisine, using all-local produce. The dinner we had was absolutely delicious – hearty, natural and flavoursome. You may also likeThe Bay Islands
