Copan

Copanis an undoubted highlight of Honduras and one of the finest sites of the Mayan world.  It is considered to be the ‘Paris’ of Mayan cities with superb quality statues, carvings and decorative features making it the artistic capital.  Copan marks the southern limit of Mayan dominance and is therefore the only site of note within Honduras.
Although not as large as Tikal, its importance to the Mayan world can never be underestimated due to its advancements in technology.  At its peak, Copan was the leader in Mayan developments of sculpture, astronomy and hieroglyphic writing.  The hieroglyphic stairway of the Rosalila temple is a fascinating example of this.

The complex itself is certainly worth a full day and possibly a couple of days of exploring.  It consists of a diverse range of tunnels, royal portraits, ball courts and temples.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Below are some examples of what you can do, though we can tailor any itinerary to suit your interests.

Copan guided tour. Half day. A guided tour of the ruins will help to build up a picture and insight into this wonderful Mayan city. Of particular importance are the 21 free-standing 3 metre stones or stelae where the passage of time was originally believed to have been recorded, giving an unparalleled insight into the Mayan calendar.

Copan Museum. Half day. Unlike other Mayan sites the museum at Copan is excellent, containing some of the best sculptures as well as an impressive full scale replica of the Rosalila temple, brightly painted as it would have been originally.

This colonial building has been transformed into an excellent hotel, situated right next to the main plaza of the town.  The building has kept most of its original structure and as such the rooms and layout of the hotel are beautiful.

This is a small, comfortable, quiet and private hotel set on one of the old, cobbled streets of Copan town. Close to the main square, and just a ten minute walk to the ruins, it is a very convenient option.
