FlorianopolisThe southern state of Santa Catarina has always been a popular destination for Brazilians due its beaches and activities. The state capital, Florianopolis, lies on a peninsular surrounded by spectacular, clean and windswept beaches with golden sands. There are numerous activities such as; horse riding on the beach, bird-watching in the Atlantic rainforest, learning to surf or perhaps watching the bizarre relationship between dolphins and the local fisherman, where for generations bottlenose dolphins have driven the fish towards the fisherman and you can literally see the fish jump into their nets! Whale Watching in Santa CatarinaThe main attraction in Santa Catarina is whale watching. Every year, between June and November, the southern coast of Santa Catarina becomes the home of the Southern Right Whale. Escaping the Antarctic winter, they migrate north in search of warmer and calmer waters to nurse their young. Santa Catarina has a newly designated area of protection, a stretch of coast 135 km long starting from the southern tip of Florianópolis, making this an ideal and safe destination. Although these whales, the second most endangered whale species in the world, can be seen along the southern seas from Australia to South America, whale watching here is easier due to the topography of the coastline. The small, half-moon shaped bays are ideal for nurturing their young and they frequently come close to the shore, sometimes within 30m from the beach. A boat trip will give an even closer encounter. Hotels and Pousadas in Santa CatarinaThere are numerous hotels and pousadas to choose from, but we would recommend one of the following; Ponta dos GanchosOne of the most exclusive beach resorts in Brazil. Located on a private peninsula it has 20 luxurious bungalows. All rooms are spacious (80 to130 sq metres) with: king-size beds, open fire, CD and DVD players and a veranda with sea views. Super deluxe rooms have a separate living room and a private sauna and Jacuzzi on the veranda. Vila Bungalows (130 sq meters) are the new addition and are located at the top of the hill with the best views and contain; private garden, infinity pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, home theatre and his/hers bathrooms. Other hotel facilities include; a gym, tennis courts, heated indoor swimming pool, games room, spa, cinema, three bars and an outstanding restaurant. Kayaks and small sailing boats are at the guest’s disposal. This is a perfect hideaway for honeymooners. Vida Sol y MarLocated on the hillside next to a perfect half moon bay, it has superb views and direct access to the beach. The Pousada has 28 rooms and 8 cottages, all built at different times and with differing styles. The best options of accommodation are the Deluxe Suites and the cottages. Deluxe Suites have an en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi, separate living area, fireplace and a balcony or patio. All rooms have telephone, fridge, fan, and cable TV and are reasonably spacious but can be dark due to the use of stone and dark wood as building materials. The cottages are the best option, made of stone they are large and open allowing for the sea breeze to pass through and have; Jacuzzi, sitting area, T.V., DVD and a large balcony with hammocks and sea views.
