Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica erupts!

COSTA Rica’s Arenal volcano has erupted, spewing geysers of lava, ash and toxic gases from its crater and forcing the evacuation of the national park where it is located. The 1633 metre tall mountain shuddered into activity at 4am on May 25th  issuing eight successive rivers of lava that flowed down its steep slopes.

Apparently nobody was at risk from the eruptions but to be safe, authorities evacuated the Arenal National Park, which is in Northern Costa Rica and only 80km north-east of San Jose the capital. The last major eruption in July 1968 killed 87 people. And there have been at least six small eruptions over the past 35 years.

Arenal – her rumbling majesty

I believe there are only five active volcano’s in the world which are safe to visit. And that is why Arenal in Costa Rica, one of the most active, continues to attract such a large number of tourists – all of whom are there to see her majesty as she smokes gracefully by day and throws out red molten lava rocks by night. A constant reminder of her presence is the low, deep rumbling sound of the lava as it rolls down the volcano. It’s a humbling experience.

The direction in which the volcano’s lava rolls changes from time to time and its therefore important to check what the current state of play is. It was four years ago, that nature decided it was time for a change and who knows when things will shift again. Right now, the Arenal Observatory Hotel high on a ridge on the south side has the front row seat. Alternatively, you can drive down a dirt track to the South side and join the hundreds of other cars as they wait patiently for the Arenal show to begin once the sun goes down. Everyone gets out the car and stands by the river – best position – and ooohs and aaaahs on cue.

The other key reason to come to Arenal is the invigorating Hot Springs. I can’t think of a more relaxing evening than spending a couple of hours in the hot spring pools surrounded by the natural paradise of tropical gardens, with a cocktail in hand. (they have some of the largest and most dramatic mangrove trees you will ever see which when subtly lit at night are incredible). You can do this at either The Tabacon Resort or The Springs Resort & Spa.

Arenal also offers world class whitewater rafting, mountain biking, kayaking, rainforest canopy tours and zip wire sky trekking and horse riding, all in the shadow of an erupting volcano! We absolutely loved the zip wiring – you get much better panoramic views than when you do it at Monteverde (which is much more enclosed and dense rainforest).

Arriving in the city of Leon, Nicaragua

So.. on from Honduras and into Nicaragua. I dont know hardly anyone who has visited the country and am told that it is the secret jewel of Central America. So more fool them ;) First stop is Leon. Arriving in the Spanish colonial city of Leon as the day wound down at 5pm, we instantly warmed to the place. It had real energy but it wasn’t bustling in any way. Smiling young faces peering out behind towering wooden blue doors. Old men pushing horses with a heavy load to trot faster down cobbled streets. Burnt orange tiled roof’s with soot stains. Street stalls with hot steaming stoves full of soft cheese pancakes. And finally the central square and the magnificience of Leon cathedral. What a sight. And there are fourteen other churches to explore – each with its own individual style. A cultural capital dating back to the 16th century, Leon is packed with eye-catching colonial buildings. A day here spent wandering the streets is most pleasureable.

Leon is set in a land of volcanoes within easy reach of some simple fishing villages along the Pacific coast. The ski-like descent of nearby Cerro Negro volcano is recommended for an exhilarating and unique experience. In fact if you like – you can get a snow-board from your guide and board down.  the ash to the bottom!! We loved it!

We stayed at the Hotel Austria.
