Ushuaia

At the far south of Argentina and where the road ends, is Ushuaia, the southern most town of its size in the world. Situated on the island of Tierra del Fuego it is a unique place containing multi-coloured wooden houses with a backdrop of snow-capped Andean peaks.
The beautiful Lapataia national park nearby gives you the chance to walk amongst the Andes that plunge directly into the Ocean whilst the Martial glacier that overlooks the town offers superb views of the city and the many islands that scatter the coastline.

The islands beyond Ushuaia are inhabited only by colonies of sea lions and penguins which can be visited on daytrips by boat.  Ushuaia is also the departure point for cruises to Antarctica and also on the Mare Australis boat to Punta Arenas.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Below are some suggestions regarding what can be seen and done in Patagonia. Due to the size of the area and the fact that it can be combined with Chilean Patagonia, we would recommend talking to us to get a more comprehensive idea of a specific itinerary.

Lapataia National Park. Located 12km west of Ushuaia, this park has some spectacular scenery. This is where the Andes reach the sea, creating beautiful bays, lakes and lagoons of varying colours. Numerous walking trails of varying difficulty run through the park, giving you the chance to see foxes and beavers along with a wide range of bird life including condors, oystercatchers, geese and albatross.

Cruising the Beagle Channel. Half day. This trip takes you through the Beagle channel to visit the islands of Los Pajaros, Lobos and Bird. These islands lie on the border with Chile and are home to colonies of cormorants and sea gulls, though they also share the rocky outcrops with large numbers of sea lions and seals.

Martial Glacier. Full day. The Martial Glacier sits in the Martial valley that overlooks Ushuaia. The full day walk from town leads you through pine forest to the very foot of the glacier, giving superb panoramic views of the end of the world. For the less energetic you can drive most of the way and get a ski lift to the top.
Recommended lodges in this area:

Ushuaia
Despite being located a 10 minute drive from town, the Los Cauquenes is an excellent place to stay, possibly the best.  The local wood it was constructed of makes it feel like a large log cabin rather than a 54 room hotel
Ushuaia
This attractive wood complex, painted fire-engine red, is high above Ushuaia at the foot of the ski lift that leads to the Martial glacier. Each spacious room has an extremely comfortable bed
Ushuaia
This small lodge has a very homely feel as it has only 9 rooms which are split over two floors and the general feel of the lodge has the sense of a guest house. The rooms are clean and comfortable with good forest views
