Peninsula Valdes
Peninsular Valdes has a barren charm about it and is one of the best places for viewing wildlife in Argentina. In short it is a haven for marine life as the ocean around this desert like peninsular is home to the Southern Right Whale, when it visits the coastline to breed and the Orca Whale.
It also hosts large colonies of sea lions and elephant seals which can be seen all year round, whilst the penguin colony of Punta Tombo, is home to over one million penguins, making it the largest in the world.
On top of this, the population of Trelew and the surrounding towns are of welsh decent and still maintain the way of life of their forefathers. THINGS TO SEE AND DO
Below are some of the attractions the peninsular and surrounding area have to offer, though we are able to tailor any itinerary to suit your requirements.
Punta Tombo penguin colony. Full day. Situated on the Atlantic coast, the area becomes a breeding and moulting ground for the Magellanic penguins during the warmer months of September to April. There can be anywhere between 3 and 5 million penguins here at any one time, making it the largest in the world. In the afternoon you visit the Welsh town of Gaiman, that still preserves its heritage and where you can still enjoy the famous welsh tea. Peninsular Valdes. Full day. Peninsular Valdes is rich in typical Patagonian flora and fauna, where sea elephants can be admired. This huge animal weighs between one to three tons, and measures up to 6 metres. Sea lions and whales can also be seen here. The drive takes you to Puerto Piramides, a beach dominated by cliffs rich in
fossils and the opportunity to embark on any whale watching. You can visit the nearby sea lion nesting ground situated on a flat rocky outcrop, jutting out into the sea, and visit Punta Delgada with its old lighthouse, Punta Norte and the Bird’s Island where a large quantity of gulls, cormorants and herons can be admired. During the day the Salina Grande can also be seen with its natural 42-metre depression, one of the deepest in the world.
Whale watching. Between May and December you have the chance to see Southern right whales. They come for the warmer, shallower and safer waters for mating and also for giving birth. Orca whales can be seen all year round and are famous for beaching themselves to capture sea lions and elephant seals.
Recommended lodges in this area:
Peninsula Valdes
With only 8 rooms and positioned within a large private reserve this is probably the best lodge on the peninsula. Although Rincon Chico is not directly on the coastline, they do have a private beach where sea lions come each year.
Peninsula Valdes
Estancia La Elvira is situated on one of the most open pieces of coastline on Peninsula Valdés, and as such is home to an important variety of mammals and sea birds and it is also a well-known destination for whales
Peninsula Valdes
The rooms are clean and comfortable but the best thing is the fantastic views, whale sightings are very common due to the geography of the coast and the most spectacular sun sets across this bay.
