El Calafate

Quite possibly the most stunning part of Argentina, if not the continent.  The town of El Calafate itself is nothing special, but the surrounding areas have the most majestic glaciers in the world which you can sail around and walk on.  These are lifetime experiences.
The National Parks of Los Glaciers is awe inspiring.  It forms part of the Patagonia ice field – the largest in the world outside of Antarctica.  Los Glaciers national park has the Perito Moreno Glacier and to walk on the glacier itself is a highlight of any visit here. This is where the variety of blue colours formed by compact ice is quite incredible, as you walk over rivers and deep crevasses.

On top of this a boat trip to the glaciers of Upsala and Onelli is not to be missed as it gives you a larger picture of the ice field and an appreciation of the size of the glaciers.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Below are some suggestions regarding what can be seen and done in El Calafate, however, due to the size of the area and the fact that it can be combined with Chilean Patagonia, we would recommend talking to us to get a more comprehensive idea of a specific itinerary.

Perito Moreno Glacier. Full day. One of the most impressive glaciers in the world, this 30,000 year old glacier stretches 4km across the front of Lake Argentina, and at water level is a surreal dark blue. The silence is broken only by the thundering of huge blocks of ice breaking away from the main body and floating down the iceberg channel. Options around the glacier include a boat ride across the lake and a 2-hour mini-trek across the glacier.

Upsala and Onelli Glaciers. Full day. From Puerto Bandera, where the southern arms of the lake meet, as do the waters from the 7 surrounding glaciers, you board your catamaran, which then cruises across the northern section of Lago Argentina, among blue icebergs and the
surrounding mountains, up to the Upsalla glacier. Continuing on to Onelli bay, you then have a short walk to view the two dominating glaciers.
