Antarctica Boats
We offer 4 different vessels to the Antarctic, each which has its own merits. All of them cater to between 60 and 114 passengers allowing you to cruise without the crowds whilst giving you space both inside and outside. Each has small zodiacs (normally with a maximum of 15 passengers) which makes excursions through the ice and onto land for a closer look at wildlife and the fascinating landscape.
All the boats offer a variety of itineraries; some are Antarctic Peninsula only whilst other longer itineraries include the Falklands, the Shetlands and South Georgia. We have our descriptions of each of the boats along with a slideshow of images and some sample itineraries to help give you a better idea of what can be done on each individual boat.
Due to the growing popularity of this destination, we advise that you book early to avoid disappointment. We can arrange all flights, transfers and accommodation throughout the rest of South and Central America to run alongside your visit to the white continent, so please contact us for further information. THE BOATS
Antarctic dream
The Antarctic Dream is an ice-reinforced vessel rebuilt as an unrestricted, worldwide passenger vessel and was completely refurbished in 2002. The Antarctic Dream can take you to the remote reaches of little known Antarctica because the ship’s unique design lets it get to places which others can only see from afar. With a capacity of 80 passengers it is a great size for cruising. Antarctica XXI Going with Antarctica XXI is one of the quickest and calmest ways to see the white continent. The formula is that you fly from Punta Arenas (Chile) to Antarctica, board your boat and spend 5 nights cruising around Antarctica before flying back to Punta Arenas! The whole trip lasts 7 days, 6 nights allowing you see what all the other vessels do without crossing the Drake Passage! Please note that the first and last departures are flying out and returning by boat or vice versa.
Plancius
The M/V Plancius is a comfortable and nicely decorated boat, but is not a luxury vessel. The voyages to the Antarctic regions are and will be primarily defined by an exploratory educational travel programme, spending as much time ashore as possible. This vessel will fully meet our demands to achieve this. The Plancius offers activities and excursions like none other in Antarctica, such as camping on the ice, diving and kayaking, making it of the most sought after vessels in the region. The Ushuaia Originally built for the National Oceanic, the USHUAIA has been refurbished to accommodate a maximum of 84 passengers in 41 comfortable twin cabins and suites. The ice-strengthened polar vessel Ushuaia has ample deck space and an open bridge policy. The full complement of inflatable landing craft ensures superb landings and wildlife viewing opportunities on the otherwise inaccessible coastline. NEED TO KNOW
Age Range & Nationality
Passengers on a typical voyage range from their 30’s to their 80’s - with a majority usually from 45 - 65. Our expeditions attract independent-minded travellers from around the world. They are characterised by a strong interest in exploring remote regions. The camaraderie and spirit that develops aboard is an important part of the expedition experience. Many departures have several nationalities on board. Combating sea sickness Anticipate some rough water on the voyage. Should you be prone to motion or sea sickness, please consult your physician which medication is appropriate and its side effects. To avert motion sickness, avoid alcohol, tobacco, excess liquids, and confined spaces. Most people feel better sitting on deck looking at the horizon or prone with eyes shut. Oddly, you will feel better with some food, such as crackers or dry toast in your stomach. Many people eat to avoid feeling sick. Remember, once you start to experience motion sickness, medications are of little help. Dress code In keeping with our expeditions atmosphere, dress on board is informal. Bring casual and comfortable clothing for all activities. Keep in mind that much of the spectacular scenery can be appreciated from deck, which can be slippery. Bring sturdy shoes with no-slip soles and make sure the parka is never far away in case of the call "Whales!" comes over the loudspeaker and you have to dash outside. Wear layers since it is comfortably warm aboard the ship - and often cold on deck. Gratuities The customary gratuity to the ship's service personnel is made as a blanket contribution at the end of the voyage which is divided among the crew. You will receive detailed guidelines aboard. Tipping is a very personal matter and the amount you wish to give is at your discretion. As a generally accepted guideline, we suggest US$8 to US$10 per person per day. It is better for the crew if you can give them US Dollar cash Non-smoking policy On board our vessels we have a non-smoking policy. It is prohibited to smoke inside the ship. You can smoke on deck but do not throw your cigarette filter overboard! Do not smoke on the aft deck in the proximity of zodiacs, engines and fuel. Please respect the wishes of non-smokers. Your physical condition You must be in good general health and you should be able to walk several hours per day. The expedition is ship-based and physically not very demanding. Although we spend as much time as possible ashore, you are welcome to remain aboard the ship if you like. To join most excursions, you must be able to get up and down the steep gangway from the ship to the water level to board the Zodiacs. Staff will assist you in and out of the boats. This will become progressively easier with practice. Ashore it can be slippery and rocky. You are travelling in remote areas without access to sophisticated medical facilities, so you must not join this expedition if you have a life-threatening condition, or need daily medical treatment.
